The objective of this research is to get information about the difference between effectiveness of using Discussion Method and Expository method toward the students' reading achievement at the seventh grade students of SMPN 3 Bantarbolang Pemalang in academic year 2010/2011.
Based on theoretical background, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: "Students who are taught by discussion method will get different achievement in reading than who are taught by using expository method".
The population of this study is the fourth grade students of SMPN 3 Bantarbolang Pemalang with the total member 172 students. To collect data, the writer takes 60 students of the population as the sample by using random sampling technique. The writer uses two groups design: the first group is experimental group and the second group is control group that are consist 30 students for each group. The first is taught by using discussion method and the second group is taught by using expository method. Then, both of them are given same reading test.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to know the difference of the two groups. The writer uses the formula of product moment to know whether the instrument is valid and reliable.
Based on the result of data analysis, t-ratio is 5,418 and t-table at the degree of freedom [df] 58 on the level of significance (?) 5% is 2,042 The comparison shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table [5,418>2,042]. It means that there is a significance difference in reading achievement between the students who are taught by using discussion method and those who are taught by using expository method.
The conclusion of the research is "Students who are taught by using Discussion Method gets different achievement than who are taught by using Expository Method".
