THE EFFECT OF APPLYING COOPERATIVE LEARNING TYPE JIGSAW TOWARD THE STUDENTS' READING ABILITY (An Experimental Research to the First Year Students of SMP N 09 Tegal in Academic Year 2010/2011)

The objective of this thesis is to find out whether there is positive effect in students' reading ability After they are taught by cooperative learning type jigsaw.
Best on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: there is a positive effect of the students reading ability after they are taught by cooperative learning type Jigsaw of the first year students at SMP N 09 Tegal in Academic year 2010/2011.
This research is experimental group the population of this research are students class VII of SMP N 09 Tegal semester two in academic year 2010/2011. The total population research is 214 Students and the writer takes 60 students as sample. Then the sample is divided into two groups, they are experimental group and control group. The experimental group students who are taught through jigsaw type and it is consists of 30 students. The control group is the students who are taught through with Grammar Translation Method and it consist of 30 students.
The writer use a test as the instrument of the research. The test takes 60 to do. The type of test is multiple choice tests with four options A, B, C or D. To find out the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer gives the test for 30 students who same competence with the sample.
Afterwards, the data is tested by t-test formula. score t-table at 5% level in significance and on the degree of 58 is 2,000. While t0 is 4,0695. So, t0 is higher than t-table (2,000>4,0695) According to this calculation hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It shows that students who are taught through jigsaw type have better reading ability than those who are taught with GTM method. It could be concluded that the application of jigsaw type give positive influence on students reading ability. As suggestion, the teacher should motivate her students in learning English; therefore the students will improve their competence in English.
