THE EFFECT OF USING EARTH (EXPLORE, ASK, READ, TELL AND HARVEST) TECHNIQUE TOWARD THE STUDENT’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research to the Second Year Students of SMA Muhammadiyah Suradadi Tegal in Academic Year of 2010/2011)

The objectives of this research are to describe about the implementation of the EARTH Technique toward the students reading achievement, to find out if the use of EARTH technique gives positive effect to students reading achievement and to find out whether or not there is a significant difference of the students who are taught by using EARTH technique and who are not in their reading achievement.
This thesis is experimental design and the population of this research is student’s class semester XI of SMA Muhammadiyah Suradadi Tegal. In the second semester in academic year 2010/2011. The total population research are 126 students and the writer takes 60 students as sample. Then the sample is divided into two groups, experimental and control group. The students of experimental group who were taught using Earth technique consists of 30 students. The control group is the students who were not taught with Earth technique consists of 30 students.
The writer uses test as instrument of the research. The test takes 60 minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choice which have five options A, B, C, D and E. To find out the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer gives the test for 30 students who same competence with the sample.
Afterward, the data is gained from the result of English test by sample research respondent during eight meeting times. The data of this research is tested by using t-test. Based of the result of data analysis, t-ratio 3,6265 whereas t table with degree of freedom is (58) on the level significance 5% table is 2,000 (3,6265 >2,000). It shows that the students who were taught using EARTH Technique have better reading achievement than those who are taught with Conventional method.
It could be concluded that the application of Earth Technique gives positive influence the students reading achievement. As suggestion the teacher should be able to select the appropriate technique, so the students will reach goals effectively.
