Language learning can’t be separated from language learning as its function for communicating. Language is a means of communication for the needs of human life, including in education. Textbook as one of the supporting factors which plays important role in lesson study has to present materials in accordance with Content Standard of School-Based Curriculum which contains communicative competence with its aspects.
The statements of the problem in this study are (1) what materials presented on the English textbook Look Ahead 2 for the Second Year Students of Senior High School author Th. M. Sudarwati and Eudia Grace are; (2) whether communicative competence found on the English textbook Look Ahead 2; and (3) how far each aspect of communicative competence presented on the English textbook Look Ahead 2 does.
The objectives of the study are (1) to describe materials which are presented in the English textbook Look Ahead 2 for the Second Year Students of Senior High School author Th. M. Sudarwati and Eudia Grace; (2) to find out communicative competence and the aspects on the English textbook Look Ahead 2; and (3) to describe how far each aspect of communicative competence presented on the English textbook Look Ahead 2.
This research is descriptive. The data source of the study is materials presented in the textbook. In collecting data, the writer maps the materials which contain aspects of communicative competence. After the data are collected, the writer analyzes the data. In analyzing data, the writer uses qualitative analysis. By selecting, categorizing, and interpreting, the result of the study is founded. In presenting the result of study, the writer uses technique of data analysis.
Based on the result of the study, the materials in the textbook contain communicative competence with its aspects. From the all aspects, discourse competence dominates the materials in the textbook. The next is linguistic competence. The third is actional competence. The fourth is socio-cultural competence. The last is strategic competence. Teacher can use this book Look Ahead 2 as English textbook for the Second Year Students of Senior High School to support teaching learning activity.
