THE EFFECT OF USING SQ3R TECHNIQUE TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY (An Experimental Study to the First Year Students of SMP Negeri 2 Talang – Tegal Regency in the Academic year 2010/2011)

The objective of the research are to describe the implementation of SQ3R technique in teaching reading and to find out whether or not the use of SQ3R technique gives positive effect toward students’ reading ability. Based on the review of related literature and logical framework, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows; using SQ3R technique give positive effect toward students’ reading ability to the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Talang - Tegal in the academic year 2010/2011.
The population of the research is the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Talang -Tegal. The number population is 205 students. The writer uses random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups, each of group consists of 30 students. Group I is experimental group, it consists of the students who are taught by using SQ3R technique and group II is control group, it consists of the students who are not taught by using SQ3R technique.
The research instrument uses multiple choice tests which consist of 30 items and each item has four options. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer tries out the instrument by giving test for 30 students that have the same competences with the sample of the study.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of data analysis shows that t-test is 3,913 with degree of freedom is 58 and the level of significant 5%, r – table is 1,645, it is absolutely said that t-test is bigger than t-table (3,913 >1,645), because of t-test is bigger than t-table so that the null hypothesis (H0) is REJECTED and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is ACCEPTED.
From the analysis result above, the writer can conclude that the using SQ3R technique give positive effect toward students’ reading ability to the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Talang – Tegal in the academic year 2010/2011.
And the suggestion is the students should first read the material given by the teacher at the beginning before using the SQ3R technique, because it's important to support the learning processes by using the SQ3R technique associated with reading material.
