THE EFFECT OF USING FUNNY PICTURES IN TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY TO THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (An Experimental Study to the Fifth Grade Students of SD Negeri 03 Gembongdadi, Tegal Regency in Academic Year 2010/2011)

The study investigates the effect of using funny pictures in teaching English vocabulary to the fifth grade students of Elementary School at SD Negeri 3 Gembongdadi, Suradadi, Tegal Regency. Vocabulary is an important thing in learning English. Where it is expected the students would know the new words in learning English vocabulary. So it can help them to remember the words.
The population of this research is all the fifth grade students of Elementary School in SD Negeri 03 Gembongdadi, Suradadi, Tegal Regency in Academic Years 2010/2011, consisting of 124 students. The writer uses Random Sampling Techniques (RST) to choose the sample of the research. The total of the sample is 60 students, and the writer divides into 2 groups, each group consisting of 30 students, the students who are taught by using funny pictures (Experiment group I) and the students who are taught without funny pictures (Control group II).
Based on theory and logical frame work, the research hypothesis proposed that “the use of funny pictures gives positive effect in teaching English vocabulary”.
The writer uses a written test as the instrument of research. The test consisting of 30 test items in multiple choice types with 4 options (A, B, C or D). The test needs less than 45 minutes to do. To define and to know the Validity and the Reliability of the instrument, the writer has to try out by giving a test to 30 students that have the same competence with the sample of study.
The result of descriptive analysis shows that on the level of significant 5% and Degree of Freedom (DF/R) 58, the result of t-test is 3,771 and t-table 2,042. So the result of t-test is higher than the t-table (3,771>2,042.).
The conclusion of the research is “the use of funny pictures gives positive effect in teaching English vocabulary to the fifth grade students of Elementary School at SD Gembongdadi, Suradadi, Tegal Regency in academic Years 2010/2011”.
