THE INFLUENCE OF THE INTENSIVE ACTIVITIES OF SCANNING AND SKIMMING READING ON READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SDN JAGALEMPENI 04 BREBES IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2010/2011

The objective of the research is to find out the intensive activities of scanning and skimming reading gives positive influence on reading achievement of the sixth grade students at SD Negeri Jagalempeni 04 Brebes.
Based on the theories and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research these is intensive activities of scanning and skimming reading gives positive influence on reading achievement of the sixth grade students at SD Negeri Jagalempeni 04 Brebes in academic year 2010/2011.
Population in this study is the sixth grade students of SD Negeri Jagalempeni 04 Brebes regency in academic year 2010/2011 consisting of two classes. Class A consists of 20 and class B consists of 20. So the number of population is 40 students. The number of the samples of this research is 40 students who are chosen by using random sampling techniques. They are divided into two groups; each group consists of 20 students. The first group is an experimental group consisting of students who are taught by using intensive activities scanning and skimming reading and the second group is a control group consisting of students who are taught without intensive activities of scanning and skimming reading.
The instrument in this research is reading text. The test consists of 10 items. The form of the test is multiple choices.
The data is analyzed by using t-test. To know whether the hypothesis is accepted or refused, the calculation must be based on significance level of 5 %.
The result of data analysis shows that the experimental group (Group 1) has its mean 73,5 And the control group (Group 2) has its mean 67,5. the t-ratio shows 2,54 while the table with significance level 5 % (0,05) and degree of freedom of 38 is 2,021. Because the t-ratio is higher than t-table (2.54> 2,021), the hypothesis is accepted. It could be concluded that the intensive activities scanning and skimming reading gives positive influence on students’ reading achievement in the sixth grade at SD Negeri Jagalempeni 04 Brebes Regency in academic year 2010/2011.
