This study aims to improve the students' ability of first grades of SMP N 1 PagerbarangTegal by implementing Group mentoring strategy.
The design of this study is Collaborative Classroom Action Research and conducted at SMP N 1 PagerbarangTegal. The subject of the study is the first grade students. This study uses reading tests, questionnaire, observation sheet and field notes as the instruments.
The implementation ofgroup mentoring strategy can help them to comprehend the reading texts. The improvement can be seen from the average score and the percentage of the students who could get at least or more than 25 points gain score. The average score show a great improvement; in the pretest study is 56, 33.61 in Cycle 1 and 68, 67 in Cycle 2. Meanwhile, the gain score also show a great improvement from 30% (9 students) among 30 students in Cycle 1 to 70 % (27Students) among 30 students in Cycle 2 who could get at least or more 15 points gain score. It means that they have met the criteria of success of this study whereas the criterion of success of this study is 90% of students get at least 15 points gain score. In line with that, Group mentoring strategy also gives positive impact toward the students' participation in the teaching learning process. There is 73.44% students' participation in Cycle 1 during the teaching and learning process using Group mentoring strategy. The students' participation is increase to 85.94% in Cycle 2.
The researcher suggests the other teachers to employ Group mentoring strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching their students. It is also suggest for the principal to provide facilities to improve the teachers' teaching quality by making a policy or cooperating with some experts to hold an in service training about teaching methods for the teachers.
