THE EFFECT OF TASK-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study to the Second Grade Students of SMP N 2 Kramat Tegal Regency in the Academic Year 2011/2012)

The objectives of this research are to describe the application of Task-Based Language teaching (TBLT) in teaching reading and to find out whether there is possitive effect on students who are taught using Task-Based Language Teaching or not.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: there is a positive effect of students’ reading achievement after they are taught by TBLT approach to the second grade students of SMP N 2 Kramat Tegal Regency in the academic year 2011/2012.
This is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. The population of this research is the second grade students of SMP N 2 Kramat Tegal Regency. The total member of population is 368 students. The writer uses random sampling technique to take the sample of research. The total of the sample is 60 students. The samples are divided into two groups namely experiment group and control group, each consists of 30 students. The instrument used in this research is test. Type of test is used multiple choice with 4 options; a,b,c, and d.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test formula to know the differences of the means of the two groups and the writer uses product moment formula to know whether the instrument is valid and reliable or not.
Based on the research of data analysis, t-value is 3,211 with the degree of freedom 58 on the level significance of 5% t-table is 1,645. The computation shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,211 > 1,645). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is Task-Based Language Teaching gives possitive effect on students’ achievement in reading.
The suggestion of the research is the teacher can use Task-Based Language Teaching as English teaching to help the students in mastering English. Especially in reading activity, make them to create an active English class. Beside it rises the students’ interest to use English for real communication, the task-based teaching also prevent the students’ boredom in the classroom. The most important is making the students’ view that English is fun and it is not an difficult lesson
