The background of this research is want to know the effect of frequency using computer towards vocabulary mastery of student’s 1st grade SMP NU 02 Dukuhturi academic year 2011/2012.
The objective of this study is to find out whether frequency of using computer gives positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
Based on review of related literature and logical framework the hypothesis of this study is; the frequency of using computer gives positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
The population of this study is students of first grade of SMP NU 2 Dukuhturi Tegal which is totally 84 students; the sample of this study is 40 students. The writer selected students who have high and low frequency in using computer from the score of questioner that is consisted of the questions which are asking students’ frequency in using computer. The writer takes the sample using stratified random sampling technique. The samples consist of two groups’ namely first group which is consist of students who have frequency using computer and second group which is consist of students who have low frequency using computer. Each group consists of 20 students.
The instruments used in this study are questioner and vocabulary test. Firstly, the writer conducts try-out test on 20 students who don’t belong to first group or second group. The writer conducts this try-out to measure the validity and reliability of the research. Types of tests used multiple choice with 4 options; a,b,c and d. The questioner is not used to collect the data, but only for grouping the sample. The questioner consists of 5 multiple choice questions. The questioners function is to collect the information about students who have high frequency using computer and students who have low frequency using computer. The second test is vocabulary test, this test has been measured its validity and reliability, before it gives to 40 students who belongs to first group and second group. This vocabulary test is used to measure the vocabulary mastery of students of the sample.
Data analysis is tested by using t-test, to test the average difference of the two groups. At the 5% significance level, on the degree of freedom (df) 38 is 2,042, t-value at 3,17. From the calculation data obtained t-value is greater than t-table (3,17>2,042). It means that the hypothesis of this study is accepted.
Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that frequency using computer gives positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
