THE EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY THROUGH MIND MAPPING METHOD (A Classroom Action Research of the Tenth Grade Students of SMK N 1 Ampelgading Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2011)

Many students are not interested in writing; it is one of difficulties for teachers to teach writing, but writing is one of the important skills, and it has to be taught at schools. So, the writer wants to improve the students’s ability in writing by means of mind mapping method.
The problems of this research are; (1) can mind mapping method be effectively used in improving the students’ ability in writing a recount text? (2) what are the advantages of mind-mapping in teaching writing? The objective of the study is ; to know whether mind mapping can improve the students ability in writing recount text or not.
The subject of this research are the tenth grade students (class X AV1) of SMK N 1 Ampelgading in academic year 2010/2011. There are twelve classes of the tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Ampelgading Pemalang in the academic year of 2010/2011. The writer selects one class that is X AV 1 as the sample of the research.
This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of two cycles.In the fisrt cycle is the process to find the lack of using mind mapping method to write a recount tex and in the second cycle is repaired. The researcher uses two instuments to collect data in this action research; a test and qustionnaire. And based on the research, the students’ progress during the teaching learning activity by using mind mapping method is good. The students’ achievement in writing recount text increases. It is supposed by the significant result of the pre-test that is 64%,it means that the value is low,the second test is 76,540%,this result encreases and the post-test is 80,540%, this result is better. The students’ proficiency in the components of writing also increases. It can be described as follows: their fluency is from 3,297 to 4,081, their grammar is from 3,027 to 3,811, the vocabulary is from 3,135 to 4,027, their understanding of the content is from 3,108 to 3,865 and their spelling is from 3,432 to 4,351.
The conclusion of this study is that mind mapping method can be effectifly used in improving the students’ ability in writing a recount text.
