THE EFFECTIVENESS OF READING ENGLISH NOVEL ON IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY
Key Word: The Effect, English Novel and Students’ Vocabulary Mastery.
The objective of this research is to know whether there is a positive effect of using English Novel as a media in teaching vocabulary to the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Wanasari Brebes in academic year 2011 / 2012.
Based on the review of rerated study and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is purpose as follows: “there is a significant difference of English vocabulary between students who are taught by using English Novel and who are taught without English Novel.
The population is the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Wanasari Brebes in academic year 2011 / 2012. The number of the population is 146 students. The samples of this research are 70 students. The samples are divided into two groups: the experiment group and the control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The samples are taken by using random sampling technique. The writer uses test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with four options, A, B, C, and D.
The data analysis of this research is gained from the result of vocabulary test done by sample of the research. Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result of data analysis t-ratio is 4,76 whereas t-table with the degree of freedom is 68 on the level significance of 5%, t-table is 1,67. It shows that t-ratio is bigger than t-table (4,76>1,67). Thus, the conclusion of the research is English Novel gives effect toward the English vocabulary to the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Wanasari Brebes in academic year 2011 / 2012.
