The Effect of Applying Role Play in Desuggestopedia Method toward The Students’ Vocabulary Achievement in The First Grade of Junior High School†(An Experimental Research of the First Grade Students of Junior High School at SMP Negeri 2 Sragi Pekalongan Regency in The Academic Year of 2011-2012)

The objective of this research is to describe the effect of applying role play in desuggestopedia method toward the students’ vocabulary achievement in the first grade of junior high school at SMP Negeri 2 Sragi Pekalongan regency in academic year of 2011-2012.
Based on the theoretical background, the hypothesis of this research is that applying role play in desuggestopedia method gives a positive effect toward the vocabulary achievement of the first grade students at SMP N 2 Sragi.
The population of this research is the first grade students of SMP N 2 Sragi. The number of population is 301 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples that consist of two groups. The first group is an experimental group and the second one is a control group. Each group consists of 38 students. The instrument used in this research is a test. The types of test used are multiple choice test with four options (a, b, c, d) and matching test.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 2,375 with the degree of freedom 74 on the significance level of 5 % t-table is 2,000. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (2,375>2,000). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a positive effect of applying role play in Desuggestopedia method toward the students’ vocabulary achievement of the first grade students at SMPN 2 Sragi. It could be seen from the mean of each group. The mean of experimental group is 7,2 and control group is 6,7. The teacher could use role play to increase the students’ creativities, build their sympathetic and emphatic characteristics, minimize their psychological barriers, and improve their self-confidence. There are several suggestions that ought to be considered by the English teachers when they conduct the teaching of vocabulary. Teachers could develop the teaching learning model by applying role play to motivate students’ participation and to improve vocabulary achievement. Besides, teachers could also apply role play in desuggestopedia to increase the students’ vocabulary achievement.
