The Effect of Applying Role Play Technique in PPP (Presentation Practice Production) Method towards Students’ English Grammar Mastery of the First Grade Student of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal Residence in Academic Year of 2011/2012

The objective of this research is to know whether the use of role play in presentation practice production method gives positive effect toward the students’ grammar mastery at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The population of research is the students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal with the total number 315 students. The writer takes 60 students as the sample of the reseach. From 60 samples, 30 students are taken as experiment group who are taught by using Role Play in PPP Method. Meanwhile, 30 others are taken as control group who are taught by using GTM in teaching grammar.
In collecting data, the writer uses grammar test. The type of the test is multiple choice test with 5 options, A, B, C, D, and E. To know validity and reliability of this instrument, the writer tried out this instrument to other students who didn’t belong to the samples of research that have the same competence with the sample of this research. From 40 items of grammar test, 9 items of grammar test are not valid, so the writer gives 30 items of grammar test to experiment group and control group.
To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test to know the difference between the two groups. The result of the data analysis of two groups is 3,135 with level of significence 5% and the degree of freedom (df) 58 and the t-table is 1,960. It means that t-test is higher than t-table (3,135>1,960). It can be concluded that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is that there is a positive effect of using Role Play in PPP method towards English Grammar Mastery of the first grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in academic year 2011/2012
