The Effect of Mind Mapping Method toward Reading Achievement of the Seventh Grade Students of Junior High School (An Experimental Study of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang in Academic Year 2011/2012)

The objectives of this study is to find outthe effect of the application of mind mapping method toward students’ reading achievement of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang in academic year 2011/2012.
Based on review of related literature and logical framework, hypothesis of this research is the use of mind mapping method give positive effect toward students’ reading achievement.
The population in this research is the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri1Pemalang in academic year 2011/2012. The total of population is 308 students of 8 classes.Based on total of the population, the writer takes 60 students as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The writer divides the sample into two groups. The first group is experimental group (who are taught by mind mapping method) and the second group is control group (who aren’t by mind mapping method)
In collecting data, the writer uses reading test as the instrument of the research which is in multiple choice. The try out instrument of the research consists of 40 test items. There are 32 valid test items and 8 invalid test items. Then, the 30 valid test items are used as post test for the sample of the research.
The data analysis is calculated by using t – test formula. Based on the result of calculation, the value of t – test is 3,910, where as the t – table is 1,960 at the 5% significant level and degree of freedom (df) 58. It shows that the t- test is higher than t – table ( 3,910 > 1,960 ). It can be concluded that the use of mind mapping method give a positive effect towards students’sreading achievement on the seventhgrade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pemalang in academic year 2011/2012.
