THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S SPEAKING SKILLS (A Classroom Action Research The Eleventh Grade TMO 2 of SMK Satya Praja Petarukan in The Academic Year 2010/2011)

The mayor problem in this research is how small group discussion method
implemented to improve students’ speaking skill of the Eleventh Grade TMO 2 of
SMK Satya Praja 2 Petarukan in academic year 2010/2011? The purpose of this
research is to know the implementation small group discussion method in
improving students’ speaking skill of the Eleventh Grade TMO 2 of SMK Satya
Praja 2 Petarukan in academic year 2010/2011.
The object of this study is the Eleventh Grade TMO 2 of SMK Satya Praja
2 petarukan in the academic year 2010/2011. I taught in the Eleventh Grade TMO
2 in which there are 40 students. The implemention of small group discussion
method in teaching and learning processes is conducted in two cycle; cycle 1 and
cycle 2. In each cycle, there are two meetings. The first meeting of cycle 1 is
“research team” activity; the students did a range of tasks in searching certain
topics in a group of 5-6 persons. The next activity in the second meeting was
“debate team”. I conducted debate session after the small group discussed the
tasks in given time.
Based on the results of the research cycle I and cycle II, it can be
summarized as follows T test calculation results obtained at 6.607 while the price
tcount than ttest with a significant level of 1% with N = (N1 + N2 - 2) = (40 + 40-2)
= 78 at 2.617. Apparently if the result is compared tcount > ttest or 6,607 > 2.617.
This means that the first hypothesis which states that "The implementation of
small group discussions are effective in learning the student’s speaking skills the
eleventh grade TMO 2 of SMK Satya Praja Petarukan in the academic year
2010/2011" is acceptable or significant. Or in other words that learning to use
small group discussions are effective in improving speaking skills.
