AN ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING REPORTED SPEECH (A Descriptive Study to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 1 Kramat, Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)

The objectives of this study are to find out the difficulties which are encountered by the Eleventh Grade students of SMA N 1 Kramat, Tegal Regency in the Academic Years of 2011/2012 in learning reported speech especially in transforming direct speech sentence into indirect speech sentence.
In analyzing the data, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative and simple quantitative measurement to find the result. The difficulties can be diagnosed from mistakes was made by students in transforming direct speech into indirect (reported) speech. The subject of this study consisted of 30 students that were chosen by the random sampling technique. The writer uses an essay test of reported speech as research instrument.
The result of the test was analyzed by five steps, identifying students’ problem through their mistake, classifying the kinds of their problems, tabulating students’ problems based on their mistake, calculating the percentage of problems by using the percentage analysis and discussing deeply problems which faced by students.
Based on the result of data analysis, most of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 1 Kramat, Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2011/2012 still faced the difficulties in learning reported speech. They still make many mistakes in transforming direct speech sentence into indirect speech sentence. The difficulties faced by students are related to the grammatical elements of reported speech. There are 4 kinds of difficulties are faced by students. The highest is in changing tense, the students’ got problem in changing of regular and irregular verb, it reaches 38.90 %, the second highest is in changing the pronoun and possessive pronoun 25.33 %, the students made mistakes in deviated structure is 21.93 %, and the difficulties in changing demonstrative and deictic adverb is 13.84 %. For that, the students should be master in grammatical elements of reported speech. So that the mistakes that occur in transforming direct speech into indirect (reported) speech can be minimized.
