The Effectiveness of the Application of the Inquiry Contextual Approach Toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery (an Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade Students’ of MTs. Asy-syafi’iyyah Jatibarang Regency in Academic Year 2011/1012)

Vocabulary is the most fundamental component in learning English Language. Vocabulary mastery is important for the students to understand the meaning of words in a sentence. Due to lack of knowledge of the students in understanding the meaning of English words, it is necessary to use an appropriate learning method to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. In this case, the writer uses inquiry contextual approach using visual aids. This is an effective method, because the students are required to be active in using dictionary to find the meaning of a word. Then, with the support of visual aids, it makes the students more interesting and exciting in learning vocabulary.
The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of applying inquiry method using visual aids toward students’ vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade of MTs. Asy-syafi’iyyah Jatibarang.
The population of this research is all of the seventh grade students at MTs. Asy-syafi’iyyah Jatibarang in academic year 2011/2012. The writer uses cluster sampling by taking 60 students as sample. They are experiment group (30 students) and control group (30 students).
Based on the background of the problem and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is “The Application of the Inquiry Contextual Approach toward Students’ gives positive effect Vocabulary Mastery”.
The writer uses a written test as instrument of the research. The form of the test is multiple choice with four options: A, B, C, and D for each item. To find validity and reliability of the instrument, the writer tested the instrument to 30 students’ who are not taken as sample group.
The analysis of this research is done by t-test. It shows the t-test result is 3,046 in the significant level of 5% with degree of freedom 58 t-table is 2,576. The result, t0 is higher than ttable (3,046 > 2,576). It means that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is difference of the students’ vocabulary achievement between the students’ who were taught by the application of the inquiry contextual approach using visual aids and the students’ who were taught by guess word. In addition, the teacher could use inquiry contextual approach using visual aids to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
