The Effect of Process Based Writing towards Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text (An Experimental Study to the First Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Tegal, in the Academic Year 2011/2012)

This research is aimed to describe the implementation of process based writing in writing descriptive text, to find out whether or not the use of process based writing gives positive effect to the students’ ability in writing descriptive text and to find out whether or not there are positive responses towards the use of process based writing in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text.
A research hypothesis has been established: There is positive effect of the use of process based writing towards students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The proficiency test (pre test and post test) is used for measurement.
This research is experimental which its design is one group pre test – post test design. The population of this research is all of the first grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tegal in the academic year 2011/2012. The subjects are 30 students of X5 from the first grade of SMA N 1 Tegal in Academic Year 2011 / 2012 in the second semester, selected through the purposive sampling from the total 240 students who were assigned to be given a treatment during 2 months.
After 8 meetings of the process-based treatment, it is shown that the students get higher score compared with the previous score. Statistically, there are significant differences of their score results on pretest and posttest.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 4.867 with the degree freedom 29 of the significance level of 5% t-table is 2.045. The computation shows that t-test
is higher than t-table (4.867 > 2.045). It means that that hypothesis of the research is accepted. The questionnaire results show that the students have positive responses towards the process based writing.
In conclusion, there is positive effect of process based writing towards students’ ability in writing descriptive text, and the students’ interest. As a result, this thesis is recomended for educational practitioners such as teachers, students, and other researchers.
The writer suggests that process based writing is one of good technique in teaching writing. Therefore, the teachers need to use process based writing as the technique in teaching writing because writing is easier when it is done in step. Moreover, process based writing is easy to be implemented and learned. It is also can be used to overcome some barriers of the students who think that writing is difficult to be learned.
