THE EFFECT OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS' SPEAKING ABILITY (An Experimental Study on The Second Year Students of SMK N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal in Academic year 2011/2012)

The objective of the research is follows to find out whether or not the use of Problem Based Learning Strategy gives positive effect to the second grade students of Vocational High School in SMK N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal in Academic year of 2011/2012 in speaking ability. This thesis uses Experimental method by using one-group design. To check the upgrading of Speaking, the writer applies two test, they are pre test and post test. The population of this study is the second grade students of SMK N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal in the Academic Year of 2011/2012, which employs purposive sampling technique to get the sample, that contains 39 students. In this research, the writer uses speaking test of instrument. This research uses t-test to analyze the result of the research afterwards the data is tested by t-test formula. Score of t table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of 38 is
2,02. While t0 is 7,01. So, t0 is higher than t table (7,01>2,02). According to this calculation the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted which means there is a positive effect of using Problem Based Learning Strategy and the students who aren’t taught by Problem Based Learning Strategy toward students’ speaking ability at the second grade students at SMK N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal in the Academic year of 2011/2012.
