The Effect of Using CIRC (Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition) Technique Towards Students’ Reading Achievement. (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of SMP N 17 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)
Keyword : CIRC Technique, Reading Achievement.
The objectives of this research are to find out if the use of CIRC tech-nique gives positive effect to students reading achievement and to find out whether or not there are significant differences of the students who are taught by using CIRC technique and who are not taught by using CIRC technique in their reading achievement on the second grade students of junior high school.
Based on the review of related literature, the hypothesis of this research is as follows: CIRC technique will give positive effect towards students reading achievement at the second grade student SMP N 17 Tegal in Academic Year of 2011/2012.
The research has taken on the second grade students at SMP N 17 Tegal in the academic year of 2011/2012. The total subject is 250. In this research, the writer is uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the subject of the research. The writer takes 72 students as the sample. They are divided into two group. Each group consists of 36 students. The first (experimental group) is stu-dents who are taught by using CIRC technique and the second (control group) is students who are taught by using GTM method.
The writer gives a test to the first group and the second group, the writer give a set of test reading, it is objective multiple-choice test which have four options A, B, C, andD. To find out the validity and the reliability of the in-strument, the writer gives the test to 34 students who are in the same level with the sample and the time allocation is 60 minutes to do.
Afterwards, the data is tested by t-test formula. To determine whether or not there is significant different result between the two group. The first group ( ) is 7,9 and the second group ( ) is 7,0 t- test is 9,44 to the t -table with 5% significant level and the degree freedom (df) = (n1+n2) – 2 = (36+36) – 2 = 70. The comparison shows that the result of t-test is higher than t-table (9,44 > 1,67).
The conclusion of this research shows that the use of CIRC Technique has positive effect towards the students’ reading achievement on the second grade students of SMP N 17 Tegal in the academic year of 2011/2012. As sug-gestion, the teacher should be able to select the appropriate technique like CIRC Technique.
