The Effect of Using Short Stories toward Reading Achievement of the Students in the Eight Grade of SMP N 1 Margasari

The objectives of this research is to find out whether or not using short stories gives positive effect in teaching reading to the students in Junior High School.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follows: students who are taught by using of short stories will get different reading achievement those who are not taught by using of short stories in academic year 2011/2012.
This is on experimental research. The research has taken at SMP N 1 Margasari in the academic year 2011/2012. The total of subject is 280 students. In this research, the writer uses random sampling teaching to choose the subject of the research. The writer takes 60 students as the sample. They are divided into two groups. Each group consists of 30 students. The first group (Experimental group) comprises the students who are taught by using of short stories and the other group (Control group) comprises the students who are not taught by using of short stories.
To check the reading achievement, after treatment the writer gave a test to experiment group and control group, the writer gave a test directly. The kind of test is a multiple choice about test reading and it consists of 40 items.
Afterwards, the data is test by t-test formula, to determine whether or not there is a significant different result between the two groups. The result of this research is that t-data is 3,235 and then it is consult with t-table. After it, it consulted with t-table by degree of freedom (Df) 58 on degree 58% t-table is 2,000. Based on the analysis show that the result of t-test is greater t-table (3,235>2,000).
The conclusion of this research is using short stories gives positive effect toward Students’ Reading Achievement to the eight grade of SMP N 1 Margasari in the academic year 2011/2012.
The writer, then gives suggestion to use short stories in teaching reading achievement because this method give positive effect toward Students’ Reading Achievement to the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Margasari in the academic year 2011/2012.
