The Effectiveness of Using Cooperative Learning Model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) Type toward Students’ Reading Achievement (An Experimental Study at the First Grade Students of SMA Negeri 3 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2011/2012).

The objectives of this research are to find out whether the use of cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type gives positive effect to the students’ reading achievement and to find out whether there is significant difference reading achievement between the students who are taught by using cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type and those who are taught by using competitive learning model.
Based on the review of related theories, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: there is possitive effect of using cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type toward students’ reading achievement at the first grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Tegal in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The population of this research is the whole of the first grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Tegal in the academic year of 2011/2012 which are 256 students. By using cluster random sampling and random sampling technique, the writer takes two classes to be samples of the research. Firstly, the writer using cluster random sampling to take the samples, the writer takes two classes, each class consists of 32 students. Then, the writer using random sampling to get 30 students each class. Those two classes are one class as experimental group and the other as the control group
In collecting the data, the writer used an objective reading test as istrument of the research. The test consists of the materials of narrative text, descriptive text, and news items text. The form of the test is multiple choice consisted of 50 questions. The time allocation to do the test is 90 minutes.
Therefore, the data of this research is tested by using t-test. It shows that t-ratio is 2,194 whereas t-table with the degree of freedom (58) and on the level significance 5% t-table is 2,000 (2,194>2,000). It means that the objectives of the research are achieved. In the other words, there is a significant difference reading achievement between the students who are taught by using cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type and those who are taught by using competitive learning model. It could be concluded that the use of cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type gives possitive effect to the students’ reading achievement. Thus, the teacher could use cooperative learning model of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) type to improve the students’ reading achivement.
