The Effect of Using Slot Substitution Drills in Audio Lingual Method towards Students’ Grammar Ability (An Experimental Study to the First Grade Students’ of SMP Negeri 1 Randudongkal in the Academic Year 2011/2012)
Key words: Slot Substitution Drills, Audio Lingual Method, Grammar
The objectives of the study are to describe the implementation of using Slot Substitution Drills in Audio Lingual Method and to find out the effect of using Slot Substitution Drills in Audio Lingual Method towards grammar ability of the first grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Randudongkal in the academic year of 2011/2012.
Slot Substitution drills are techniques of Audio Lingual Method. Slot substitution drills are divided into two types. They are single-slot substitution drill and multiple-slot substitution drill. Those are the similar drilling, but in multiple-slot substitution drill, the teacher gives cue phrases, one at a time that fit into different slots in the dialog line.
Based on the theoretical background, the hypothesis of this study is that there is a positive effect of using slot substitution drills in Audio Lingual Method towards grammar ability of the first grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Randudongkal in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The population of this research is the first grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Randudongkal which consists of 294 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples of the research. They are divided into two groups. The first group is an experimental group which consists of the students who are taught by using slot substitution drills and the second one is a control group that consists of the students who are not taught by using slot substitution drills. Each group consists of 30 students. The instrument used in this research is a test. The type of test used is multiple choice.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 3,505 with the degree of freedom 58 on the significance level of 5%. T-table is 2,000. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (3,505 > 2,000). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a significant difference between the students who are taught by using slot substitution drills in Audio Lingual Method and the students who are not taught by using slot substitution drills in Audio Lingual Method. In addition, the teacher could use slot substitution drills to improve the students’ self-confidence.
