Key words: The application of P2R (Preview, Read and Review) Technique, Students’ Reading Achievement.
The objective of this research is to know the effect of P2R Technique toward the students’ reading achievement at the second grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Tegal in the academic year 2011/2012
Based on the theories of language learning and theories of language teaching, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: “The use of P2R Technique gives a positive effect toward the students’ reading achievement at the second grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Tegal”
The population of this research is the second grade students of SMA N 5 Tegal, in academic year 2011/2012 which consists of 237 students. The research takes 60 students for the sample who are selected by using cluster sampling technique. The sample consists of two groups. They are 30 students as an experiment group who are taught by using P2RTechnique and 30 students as a control group who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method.
The writer uses test as the instrument of the research. The test needs 60 minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with five options. To know validity of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students who have the same competence.
Data analysis of the research is tested by using t-test, to test the difference of the means of the two groups. After having connected to the significant 5% t-table is 2,000, so that the result of calculation analysis shows that t-ratio is 3,105. It means that the result of t-test is higher than t-table. Thus the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research shows that the use of P2R Technique has positive effect toward the students’ reading achievement at the second grade students of SMA N 5 Tegal in academic year 2011/2012. As suggestion, the teacher should be able to select the appropriate technique just like P2R Technique.
