The Effective of Cuisenaire Rods Teaching Media toward students’ Mastery in Vocabulary (An Experimental Study to the 7th Grade Students of SMP Hasyim Asy’ari Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2011/2012).

The objective of the study is to find out whether Cuisenaire rods gives positive effect to the students’ ability in understanding vocabulary.
Based on the theories and the theoretical background, the hypothesis of this study is proposed as follow: There is positive effect of using Cuisenaire rods toward the students’ ability in vocabulary in academic year 2011/2012.
The population of this research is the seventh grade students of SMP Hasyim Asy’ari Pemalang which consists of 68 students. This research takes 60 students to be the samples of the research. They are divided into two groups which consists of 30 students each group.
The writer uses vocabulary test as an instrument of this research. The test consists of 50 items. The types of the test are multiple choice, matching, completion and essay. The question is done within 80 minutes.
The analysis technique used is t-test with level of significance 0.5% with degree of freedom 78, the result of t-test is 4.039 and t-table is 1.645. The hypothesis is accepted because the result of t-test is higher than t-table (4.039>1.645).
The final result of the research shows that there is a difference between the students who are taught by using Cuisenaire rods and the students who are not taught by using Cuisenaire rods. Based on the result, the conclusion of this research is there is positive effect of using Cuisenaire rods toward students’ ability in vocabulary in Academic Year of 2011/2012.
In teaching and learning by using Cuisenaire rods teacher gives a more concrete explanation. Because, on several occasions, the obstacle in the learning process will appear. Examples in learning adjectives, especially abstract, not all can be taught to visualize rod. Students should try to imagine and compare rods with reality. they understand something from the particular parts to achieve full unity.
