THE USE OF JUMBLED LETTER GAME TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS ENGLISH VOCABULARY (The Case of the Fifth Grade of SDN 04 Kendalsari Petarukan in the Academic year 2010/2011)
The objective of the research is to find out the significant difference of the student ability on English vocabulary before and after they are taught by using jumbled letters game in teaching vocabulary and to find out the benefits of using jumbled letters game.
The game as media to teach English can not only give motivation but can also provide exellent practice for improving their skills in vocabulary. Jumbled letters game is a media that can help the students to improve their vocabulary in learning English vocabulary. The role of this game is the students have to rearrange the jumbled letters into a good word. This game is memorable. The students can memorize the words that found. It is suitable game to teach vocabulary especially teaching for young learners.
The design of the research is quantitative research design. In the quantitative design, the researcher uses experimental method. The population of the research is the fifth grade students of SDN 04 Kendalsari Petarukan in Academic year 2010/2011. The total numbers of students is 36 students. The researcher takes all of the students as a sample. Actually, it is called total sampling. The researcher uses the test; pre-test and post-test as instruments in collecting the data.
After conducting the test, the researcher gets the research findings. The students` ability on English vocabulary before they are taught by using jumbled letters game is poor and it is below average in the level of achievement, it can be shown from the result of the students` pre-test scores. The researcher finds out the students` ability on English vocabulary after they are taught by using jumbled letters game that is good and it is above average in the level of achievement, it can be shown from the result of students` post-test scores. And then the researcher also finds out significance different before and after they are taught by using jumbled letters game because the result of t-test is higher than the level of significence in the distribution of t-table.
The research result shows that the students` English vocabulary ability has increased. There are 36 students score in pre-test 64.30%, score in post-test 78.8%. From the result of t-test that is 14.63. Based on the distribution t-table with N = 36 the research shows the distribution t-table was 2.04 at 5% level of significant. From the explanation above, because the result of the t-test shows that is 14.63 > 2.04
From the research findings, the researcher get the conclusions, they are : the students` ability on English vocabulary before they are taught by using jumbled letters game is below average, the students` ability on English vocabulary after they are taught by using jumbled letters game is above average, and she knows that there is significant difference before and after they are taught by using jumbled letters game. The researcher offers suggestion that is a good way if we use jumbled letters game as a media to improve students` English vocabulary.
