THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WORD ANALOGIES IN IMPROVING THE ENGLISH VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Study of the Eight Grade Students of SMPNegeri 6 BrebesRegency in the Academic Year 2010/2011)

The objective of this research is to find out whether or there is not a significant different in English vocabulary mastery between the students who learn word analogies and the student who don’t learn word analogies in vocabulary in the eight grade of SMP Negeri 6 Brebes in academic years 2010/2011.
Based on the theoretical study and the theories of language teaching, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows: “There is significant difference in English vocabulary mastery between the students who learns word analogies and the student who don’t learn word analogies in vocabulary”.
The population of this research is the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Brebesin Academic year 2010/2011. The total number is 160 students. The writer use random sampling technique to choose the sample of this research. The number of sample is 40 students. The sample consist of two groups, they are the experiment group and the control group, each group consist of 20 students. The data of this research was taken from a test. The test takes 70 minute to do. The type of this test is multiple choice with 4 options A, B, C and D. To know the validity and reliability of the instrument the writer gives a test to 20 students having the same competence with the sample of this research.
The data of this research are gained from the result of test done by the sample before starting of research and at the end of the research. Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test to know the difference mean of the two groups.From the result data analysis shows that t-ratio is 4,131 on the level of significant 5% and degree of freedom (df)38 is obtained t-table 2,042. The comparison shows that t-test is higher than t-table ( 4,131> 2,042). So there is significant difference in English vocabulary mastery between the students who learn word analogies in English vocabulary and the students who don’t learn word analogies in English vocabulary.
From the final result of the research it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in English vocabulary mastery between the students who learn word analogies and the student who don’t learn word analogies in vocabulary in the eight grade of SMP Negeri 6 Brebes in academic years 2010/2011.
