The Effect of SSS (Start with Simple Stories) Technique Towards the Students Reading Achievement" (An Experimental Study on the First Grade Students of SMA Muhamadiyah Tegal In Academic Year 2010/2001)
Key words: The Effect of using SSS (Start with Simple Stories), the Students Reading Achievement.
The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is a positive effect of using SSS (Start with Simple Stories) toward Students’ Reading Achievement in the First Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah in the Academic Year of 2010/2011.
Based on the theory and frame of thinking, the research hypothesis there is a positive effect of using SSS (Start with Simple Stories) to the students’ reading achievement in the first grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal in the academic year of 2010/2011.
Population of this research is students of the first grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal which is totally 190 students. To collect the data, the writer takes 60 students from the population as the sample by using random sampling technique. Then, the writer selected the students who were taught by using SSS (Start with Simple Stories) and the students who were taught by using GTM to be sample of the research, then both of them are given the same reading test. The sample are divided into two groups namely experimental group and control group, each group consists of 30 students. The experimental group is the students who were taught using SSS ( Start with Simple Stories), whereas the control group is the students who were taught using GTM.
The writer used test as the instrument of the research. Type of the research is multiple choice with 5 options: a, b, c, d and e. The writer conducted try out test on 30 students who have the same ability with research sample to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument. Before the writer uses the instrument to get data of research, the writer measured validity and reliability of instrument first. Data analysis is tested by using t-test, the writer used t-test to know the difference between two groups. Based on the data analysis, t-ratio is 5,910 with the degree of freedom (df) is 58 on the level of significance 5% and the t-table is 2,000. It means that the t-ratio is higher than t-table (5,910 > 2,000). It means that the research hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is there is a positive effect of using SSS (Start with Simple Stories) toward students’ reading achievement of the first grade of SMA Muhammadiyah Tegal in the academic year of 2010/2011.
