A STUDY OF CORELATION BETWEEN THE VOCABULARY MASTERY AND THE READING COMPREHENSION MASTERY OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMP 02 SLAWI TEGAL

The objective of the research is to find out whether there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and the reading comprehension mastery in English reading achievement of the second year students of SMP N 2 Slawi.
The population of the study is the second year students of SMP N 2 Slawi in the second semester in semester two in the academic year 2010/2011. The total number of the population is 307 students. There are 60 students who are taken as sample of the research, they are 30 students of class VIII A and 30 students of class VIII B.
The Pearson Product Moment is used to find out the correlation between the vocabulary mastery and the reading comprehension mastery. The result of mean score shows that the r-data (0,371) is higher than the r-table (0,330) at confidence level 1% and 0,254 at confidence level 5%. This indicates that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
Based on the result of applying the statics analyzed by computer, the conclusion is presented. The conclusion is based on the research findings.
- There is positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and the reading comprehension mastery of the second year students of SMP N 2 Slawi. It is supported by the value of r-observed is higher than r-table (0,371>0,330).
From the result of verification above, it is expected that teacher can improve their professionalism and the teaching process, especially in teaching reading comprehension and the students should enrich their vocabulary to have good mastery in the reading comprehension.
