The Effect of the Application of the Talking Stick towards the Students’ Reading Achievement An Experimental Study on the Eighth Year Students of SMP N 1 Wanasari Brebes in Academic Year 2010/2011

The objective of this research is to know the effect of the application of the talking stick towards the students’ reading achievement in the eighth year of SMP N 1 Wanasari Brebes in academic year 2010/2011.
Based on the theories of language learning and theories of language teaching, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: “The use of Talking Stick gives a positive effect towards the students’ reading achievement in the eighth year of SMP N 1 Wanasari Brebes.”
The population of the research is the eighth year students of SMP N 1 Wanasari Brebes, in academic year 2010/2011 which consists of 128 students. The research takes 60 students for the sample who are selected by using random sampling technique. The sample consists of two groups. They are 30 students as an experiment group who are taught by using talking stick and 30 students as a control group who are taught by using grammar translation method.
The writer uses test as the instrument of the research. The test needs eighty minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with five options. To know validity of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students having the same competence.
Data analysis of the research is tested by using t-test, to test the difference of the means of the two groups. After having connected to the significant level 5% t-table is 1,645, so that the result of calculation analysis show T-ratio is 3,678. It means the result of t-test is higher than t-table. Thus, the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research shows that the use of talking stick has positive effect toward the students’ reading achievement on the eighth year students of SMP N 1 Wanasari Brebes in Academic year 2010/2011.
