THE EFFECTIVENESS OF APPLYING THE CUE CARDS TOWARD STUDENTS’ WRITING ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (An Experimental Study on the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 01 Kedungbanteng Tegal in Academic Year of 2010/2011)

This study was conducted under the considerations that seventh grade students of SMP need media in teaching-learning process. One of them is the use of the cue cards which can help them to make descriptive text.
In this thesis, the objectives of the study was to find out whether there is positive effect of the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts after being taught by using the cue cards and to find out whether there is any significant difference in the improvement of students’ mastery in writing descriptive text using the cue cards and without using the cue cards.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted an experimental quantitative research. The experiment was held through pretestposttest group design. The population of the study was the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 1 Kedung Banteng, Tegal. The total number of sample in this study was 40 students. The data are collected through test.
In solving the problems, the writer carried out an experimental study using statistical method called t-test. The writer uses two groups: experimental group and control group. In the control group the writer uses written text story, while in the experimental group, the writer uses the cue cards.
The computation result of t-test is 3,720. The critical value of t is 1,645 for α = 0,05 and df = 38. Because t value is higher than the critical value of t (3,720>1,645), it could be concluded that there is significant difference in the students’ achievement between the students who were taught using the cue cards and students who were taught without the cue cards. From the histogram, it could be concluded that the cue cards was an effective medium of teaching descriptive text.
Referring to the experience in this research, the writer offer suggestion to the teacher to improve the students' ability in making descriptive text in order to get better result. The use of the cue cards should be recommended to English teachers, especially to teach Junior High School students.
