Improving students’ speaking ability through story pictures, a classroom action research to the fifth grade students of sd bumijawa 02, Tegal 2010 / 2011

The topic of this study is improving students’ speaking ability through story picture. (a classroom action research to the fifth grade students of SD Bumijawa02, Tegal 2010/2011)
The objective of the study is to describe the application of teaching speaking skill using story picture, find out how far the students can improve their speaking ability by using story picture, and to find out the role of story picture in improving students speaking ability. The subject of the study is the fifth grade students of SD N 02 Bumijawa, tegal . There are 20 students, which consisted of 10 boys and 10 girls. Classroom action research is adopted in this study. There are two cycles. .Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflecting. The writer used one group design, so, there is only one research in this study
The writer uses speaking test as the instrument of the test. There are 5 questions but the students are allowed to choose one of them. The test is done for 5 minutes for each student.
The result of the observation and questionnaire during the research shows that there is improvement of speaking ability.
Based on the result, in pre test, students that get score less than 65 are 19 students , and the students that got score more than 65 are 1 students or with mean of pre test is 43,62 high score is 68 and low score is 24. After the observation has done, the writer concludes they are the students that always not pay attention while teaching and learning. Base on the result of first cycle, The students began learning speaking using story pictures, the researcher got that there are 5students got score less than 65 and 13 students got score more than 65 with result mean of test in cycle I is 63.62, lowest score is 52 and high score is 88. Based on the result of the test in cycle II, there are no students get score less than 65, and there are 12 students get score more than 65 with mean of cycle II test is 76,38, the lowest score is 72 and the highest score is 96.
The conclusion of the research is story picture is an appropriate media in teaching speaking that is why the teacher should use it as one of the media to make the students motivated in speaking English.
