The Effect of Teams Games Tournament (TGT) Toward Students’ English Achievement at Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School ( An Experimental Study on The Eighth Grade Students in The Second Semester of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal Regency in Academic Year 2010/2011 )

Teaching English to the young learners should use some effective techniques and methods. The techniques and methods that are used are expected to be able to make learners enjoy in their study and they always want to study in a long time. To have good English proficiency, a complete comprehension in English teaching learning is required. One of the techniques that emphasizes in all skills of language is Teams Games Tournament (TGT) technique.
The objective of this research is to find out the significant differences in the students’ English achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi between those who are taught by using Teams Game Tournament (TGT) technique and those who are taught by using Grammar-Translation Method (GTM).
The population of this research is all of the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi, Tegal Regency. The number of population is 339 students who are devided into eight classes. Accordingly, the writer takes 60 students as the samples of the research, 30 students as experimental group who are taught by using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and 30 students as control group who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method (GTM).
To collect data, the researcher gives an achievement English test to the samples of the research. The test consists of 30 test items, the type of test is multiple choice test with 4 options. Data analysis of this research result is tested by using t-test. Based on the analysis of data, it is found that t-test = 4,308 is higher than t-table = 1,645 with the degree of freedom is 58 and the level of significant (α) 5% ( t-test 4,308 > t-table 1,645). It shows that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion is based on the research findings: there is significant difference in the students’ English achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi between those who are taught by using Teams Game Tournament (TGT) technique and those who are taught by using Grammar-Translation Method (GTM). It is supported by the value of t-test which is higher than t-table, 4,308>1,645.
