The Effect of Grammar Translation Method toward Student’s Vocabulary Mastery (An Experimental Study to the Eight Grade Students of SMP Nurul Islam Tanahbaya Pemalang Regency in the Academic Year of 2012/2013

The objective of this research is to know whether there is difference of vocabulary mastery between the students who are taught by using grammar translation method and the students who are not taught by using grammar translation method.
Based on the research, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: there is significant difference of vocabulary mastery between students who are taught by using grammar translation method and the students who are not taught by using grammar translation method in the eight grade students of SMP Nurul Islam Tanahbaya Pemalang Regency in academic year 2012/2013.
In relation to the aims, the writer carries out Experiment Study. The population of this research is the Eight Grade students of SMP Nurul Islam Tanahbaya Pemalang Regency in Academic Year 2012/2013. The total students of the Eight Grade is 40 students which is divided in two classes, they are class A and class B. The research uses Random SamplingTechnique, it is by giving the question of the instrument to find out the vocabulary mastery. Then it takes 40 students as the sample. They are classified into two groups. The Experimental Group, it consists of 20 students and the Controlled Group, it consists of 20 students too. The Experimental Group is the group who are taught by using grammar translation method, and the Controlled Group is the group who are not taught by using grammar translation method.
The data of the research is obtained by using the multiple choice test, which consist of 20 questions, the analysis of this research is conducted by using t-test. The result of t-test computation is 2,863. While in the table with 1% of the significanct level and 38 degree of freedom, t-table is 2,704. It means that the t-counted is higher than t-table (2,863 > 2,704). Thus, the result of the research shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table, so the hypothesis is accepted.
The conclusion of the reseach is that the grammar translation method can give the positive effect towards vocabulary mastery in the Eight Grade of SMP Nurul Islam Tanahbaya Pemalang Regency nin academic year 2012/2013.
