The Effect of Making Group Discussion in Doing the Co curricular Assignment toward the Students’ Reading Achievement. (An Experimental Study of the Seventh Grade Students of Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal Junior High School in Academic year 2011 – 2012).

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not co-curricular assignment application has positive effect towards the students’ reading achievement of the seventh Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal in Academic Year 2011/2012
Based on the theoretical background and logical frame of thinking, the hypothesis of this research is “co-curricular assignment application can give positive effect on the students’ reading achievement of the seventh grade student of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tegal”.
The population of this research is all the students in the seventh grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Tegal in academic year 2011-2012 which consist of 92 students. From the population the writer chooses 60 students as the sample of the research by using random sampling technique. The first class is a control group, which consist of 30 students and the second group as the experiment group, which consist of 30 students too. The samples are taken at random. The experimental group consists of the students who are taught by using co-currcular assignent application and the control group consists of the students who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method.
The writer uses a test to analyze the data. The writer uses t- test formula to know the different reading achievement of the two groups. The writer uses the formula of product Moment to know whether the instrument is valid and reliable.
Based on the result of data, t- ratio is 2,065 and the t- table at the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significance (a) 5 % is 2,000. The comparison shows that t- ratio is higher than table (2,065> 2,000). Therefore, Hi is accepted and Ho is refused.
The conclusion of this research is that the use of group discussion in doing the co-curricular assignment application can give positive effect on the student’s reading achievement in the seventh grade students in the second semester at SMP Muhammadiyah Tegal in academic year 2011/2012.
