The Effect of Student Team-Achievement Division (STAD) Technique on Students Reading Ability (An Experimental Research to The Second Year Students of SMP N 1 Dukuhwaru Tegal Regency in Academic Year 2012/2013)
Key word : Student Team-Achievement Division ( STAD ), Reading Ability
The objective of this thesis is to find out whether or not the Student Team-Achievement Division ( STAD ) Technique in the teaching reading give positive effect to students’ reading ability. STAD primarily is a cognitive enrichment approach that teaches students to think more precisely and deeply about what they read, using the following four-step strategy.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: There is a positive effect to the students’ reading ability who are taught by using Reap Technique in the second year students of SMP N 1 Dukuhwaru in Academic Year 2012/2013.
This is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. Population of this research is students of the second year of SMP N 1 Dukuhwaru which is totally 358 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample of research. The total of the sample is 80 students. From 80 samples of students, 40 students are taken as experiment group who are taught by using STAD Technique, whereas 40 others are taken as control group who are taught without using STAD Technique.
To check the improvement of students reading ability, the writer uses a test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple-choice, consists of 30 items. Test is used to know whether or not there is improvement in the students’ reading ability after they are taught by STAD technique.
The description of the data obtained between group 1 (experiment group) with a mean value (78,135) , and group 2 (control group with a mean value (66.552) average. Afterwards, to analyze the data the writer uses t-test to know the differences between two group. From the data, the score of the t-table at 5% level of significance and the degree of freedom (df) 78 is 2,000, while the t-ratio is 5,806. So, t-ratio (t0) is higher than t-table (5,806>2,000). According to this calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means, there is a positive effect to the students reading ability who taught by using Student Team-Achievement (STAD) Technique in the second year students of SMP N 1 Dukuhwaru in academic year 2012/2013.
