A Descriptive study of Elementary School Students English Proficiency in Kecamatan Songgom Kabupaten Brebes in Academic Year 2011/2012

The English Proficiency has become a key to success for individuals, society and Indonesia in so many kinds of fields in the global era today. This situation stimulates people to improve their English ability
Most of the students in Indonesia take the formal school in improving their English At elementary school level.
There are four language skill should be mastered by students in mastering English include listening, reading skill, writing skill, and speaking skill. Beside those skills, students are expected to master the component in English such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
The aims of English teaching in Indonesia is to reach the competency that can be seen on students’ ability in communicating.
This research has objective to describe the students’ English Proficiency, in this research the writer focuses on reading, writing, structure, and vocabulary mastery.
The population of the research is Fifth Grade Students of elementary school in Kecamatan Songgom, they are SD N Songgom 01, SD N Songgom 02, SD N Songgom03, SD N Songgom 04, SD N Songgom 05, SD N Songgom 06, SD N Songgom 08, SD N Cenang 01, SD N Songgom 02 and SD N Dukuhmaja 03. Total of student is 1687. The writer took 30 students for each school as the sample of this research, so the total of sample is 300 students.
In getting data, the writer conducted four sets of test as the instruments, they are reading, writing, vocebulary, and structure test. The kind of test that were used in this research was multiple choices.
The result of this research showed that for reading, writing, vocabulary, and structure mastery is good catagory. The computation obtained that for reading test, the students can correctly answer 83,6%, for writing test the students can correctly answer 83,7%, for structure test the students can correctly answer 80,5% and for vocabulary test the students can correctly answer 84,3%.
Based on the result of this research, the writer suggests to the student and teacher should maintain the reading, writing, structure and vocabulary mastery because they are good enough but for structure, the students should improve by more practicing and paying more attention when the teacher explains the lesson, and for the teacher should be more creative in teaching structure.
