A Study on Students’ Errors in Changing Sentences Using The Simple Present Tense into Sentences Using The Simple Past Tense (A Study of The Seventh Grade Students at SMP Negeri 1 Bulakamba Brebes in Academic Year 2012/2013)

The main purpose of this thesis is to study students’ errors in changing sentences using the simple present tense into sentences using the simple past tense in the seventh grade at SMP Negeri 1 Bulakamba Brebes in Academic Year 2012/2013.
The population of this study is all of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bulakamba Brebes in Academic Year 2012/2013 which consist of 8 classes. The total number of population is 318 students. From the population, 40 students are taken to be the sample of the research.
To know students’ errors in changing sentences using the simple present tense into sentences using the simple past tense, the researcher uses a test as instrument of this study. The test used is written test (essay test) which consists of twenty test items. After students’ errors are known, then the students’ errors are classified and counted to know types of students’ errors, percentage number of each type of errors and the most dominant error type that is done by the students. The students’ errors are classified in four types of errors based on surface strategy taxonomy, they are Omission Error, Addition Error, Misformation Error, Misordering Error.
Based on the research result, it can be known the percentage numbers of types of errors that are done by students in changing sentences using the simple present tense into sentences using the simple past tense. Misformation Error is the most dominant error type. It is 79,962%, then Omission Error is 9,640%, Addition Error is 6,24% and Misordering Error is 3,024%. Besides that, there are six test items that are not answered by some students. Those have percentage number as many as 1,134%.
The conclusion of this study is that students’ mastery about The Simple Present Tense and The Simple Past Tense is Bad, it can be seen at the research result that types of errors that were made by the students comprise all types of errors. And it also shows that there are only 3 students that get point 70−84. Based on the result, the researcher suggests that English teachers of the seventh grade should be able to explain The Simple Present Tense and The Simple Past Tense intensively to his/her students. And for students, they must study intently about The Simple Present Tense and The Simple Past Tense by many of reading reference books about tenses.
