THE EFFECT OF SITUATIONAL LANGUAGE TEACHING IN THE TEACHING READING
The purpose of this research is to know whether Situational Language Teaching give positive effect toward the third year students in the teaching reading.
Based on the theoretical background and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is “There is a positive effect of using Situational Language Teaching in the teaching reading of the third year students of SMP Negeri 17, Tegal Regency”. In other word, the students who have been taught by using Situational Language Teaching in the teaching reading will have the achievement result of English learning in reading better than the students who have not been taught by using Situational Language Teaching in the teaching reading.
The population of this research is the Third year students at SMP Negeri 17 Tegal. The number of population is 246 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups; each group consists of 30 students. Group I is experimental group, it consists of the students who have been taught by using Situational Language Teaching. Group II is control group, it consists of the students who have not been taught by using Situational Language Teaching.
The research instrument used in this research is multiple choice test which consists of 30 items and each item has four options. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer tries out the instrument by giving test to 30 students having the same competence with the sample of the study.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 3,250, with degree freedom is 58 and the level of significance (α) 5% = 1,645. it is absolutely said that t-test is higher than t-table (3,250>1,645), because of the t-test is higher than t-table, so that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
From the result of data analysis, the writer can conclude that the use of Situational Language Teaching gives positive effect on reading achievement of the third year students of SMP Negeri 17 Tegal in Academic Year 2012/2013
