THE EFFECT OF USING SCRAMBLED SENTENCES IN COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING TOWARDS STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY (An Experimental Study to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 4 Pemalang in Academic Year 2011/2012)
Key Words : Experiment, Writing, Scrambled Sentences Technique, CLT.
The objectives of the research are to know whether or not there is positive effect in students’ writing ability after they are taught by scrambled sentences and to find out whether or not using scrambled sentences motivates the students to be active and creative in learning writing.
Based on the review of related literature and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: “The students who are taught using scrambled sentences technique are predicted to get a better achievement than the students who are taught using question and answer technique.”
The population of the research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Pemalang. To collect the data, the writer takes two classes from the population as the sample using cluster random sampling technique. The writer uses two-group design: one group as experimental group and the other as control group. Each group consists of twenty-four students. The experimental group is taught by scrambled sentences technique, whereas the control group is taught by question and answer teachnique. Then, both of them are given the same writing test.
The writer uses scrambled sentences test as the instrument of the research. The test consists of ten test items. The students do the test in 90 minutes. To know the validity and reliability of the test, the writer tries out the instrument by giving the test to 24 students who have the same competence as the sample of research.
The data of this research is gained from writing test that is given to the sample of this research. To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test to know the difference between the two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 1,789 with degree of freedom (df) 46 and the level of significance (α) 5 %, the t-table is 1,645. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (1,789>1,645). It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is the students who are taught using scrambled sentences technique get a better achievement than the students who are taught using question and answer technique. In other words, there is a positive effect of using scrambled sentences in communicative language teaching towards students’ writing ability to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Pemalang in academic year 2011/2012. For that reason, the use of scrambled sentences technique may be good to be applied in learning writing.
