The Effect of Using Word Category Method Towards Students Reading Achievement ( An Experimental Study to Tenth Grade Students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)

The purpose of this research is to gain information about “The Effect of Using Word Category Method Towards Students Reading Achievement to Tenth grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2011/2012 “.
Based on the theoretical background, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: The using of word category method gives positive effect towards students reading achievement at Tenth grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang.
The populations of this research are the first year students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang. The numbers of population is 245 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample that consists of two groups. The first group is the experimental group and the second one is the control group. Each group consists of 30 students.
The writer uses test as the instrument of this study. The form of the test is multiple choices. It consists of 30 test items. It has five options a, b, c, d, and e. And the test is done in 60 minutes. The data of this research is gained from the result of Reading test. Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test to test the difference mean of the two groups. The result of t- test is 3,55, whereas t- table 0,266 (3,55 > 0,266) at significance level of 5% and degree of freedom is 58. The result of t- test is higher than t- table.
The conclusion of this research is that the use of word category method can give positive effect on the student’s reading achievement to Tenth grade student’s at SMA PGRI 1 Taman Pemalang in the academic year 2011/2012.
