THE EFFECT OF SPONTANEOUS GROUP DISCUSSION METHOD ON STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY (An Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 12 Tegal in Academic Year of 2012 / 2013)

The objective of this research is to find out The Effect of the Spontaneous Group Discussion Method on Students’ Reading (An Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N 12 Tegal in Academic Year of 2012/2013).
The Research is done by classifying sample into two groups. They are the Experiment group and Control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling. They are divided into two groups, group one is experiment group that consists of 30 students who are taught by using spontaneous group discussion method and group two is control group that consists of 30 students who are taught without using spontaneous group discussion method.
The sample is given a test containing 30 questions. The writer uses multiple choices as the instrument to know validity and reliability of the instrument. The writer gives a try out test for students who having the same competence with the sample.
The data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (d.f) 58 on the level significant of 5% is 2,000, it shows that t-test is lower than t-table (1,287 < 2,000). It means that there is no significant difference of the reading ability between students who are taught by using cooperative learning using spontaneous group discussion and students who are taught without using spontaneous group discussion method.
The conclusion of this research is teaching by using cooperative learning using spontaneous group discussion method doesn’t give difference in result of learning and positive effect on students’ reading ability at seventh grade students of SMP N 12 Tegal in academic year of 2012/2013.
