AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING INDEPENDENT CLAUSES AND DEPENDENT CLAUSES (A Descriptive Study of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Bantarbolang Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The development of language makes English become the most popular among the other languages. English has important role in the world. In learning English, some people did not pay attention about the rules and makes the information difficult to understand. Some people usually make a sentence or paragraph but do not know about grammar. They often make a sentence without any subject, or even ignore the punctuation in their sentence that make their sentence become more difficult to understand. An example of that sentence is the complete sentence that contains at least an independent clause and dependent clause.
Based on the above background, this study tries to know the ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Bantarbolang in writing independent clause and dependent clause and discover their difficulties in writing independent clause and dependent clause in the Academic year of 2012/2013.
This study belongs to a descriptive qualitative research. In conducting this study, the writer uses one group design. The population of this study is the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Bantarbolang in the academic year of 2012/2013. The writer uses purposive sampling technique to take the sample of the study. Total samples of this study are 40 students. Those samples would participate in a test and interview.
In this study, the writer used essay writing test and interview as the instruments of the study. The test just only has a task that should the students do. That task is making 10 sentences that contain at least an independent clause and dependent clause. The interview has 3 questions for the students and a question for their English teachers. The writer conducted the test to 40 sample students and conducted the interview to 40 sample students and 2 English teachers who teach the eleventh grade students.
Based on the test result, the scores show that the students’ ability in writing independent clause and dependent clause is relatively good. The writer also found total 734 errors made by the sample students that belong to grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling and capitalization error. Finally from the interview result with the sample students and their English teachers the writer discovered that vocabulary and grammar are the main difficulties faced by the students in writing independent clause and dependent clause.
