THE EFFECT OF USING BROCHURES TOWARDS STUDENTS’ WRITING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study on the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA PGRI 1 TAMAN in the Academic Year of 2012/ 2013)

The objectives of this research are to find out the implementation of brochure in teaching writing at the eleventh grade of SMA PGRI 1 Taman and to find out whether or not the use of brochure in teaching writing gives positive effect towards students’ achievement at the eleventh grade of SMA PGRI 1 Taman.
Based on review of related literature and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is : the use of brochures gives positive effect towards students’ writing achievement at the eleventh grade of SMA PGRI 1 Taman.
This research is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two group design as research design. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI 1 Taman consisting of 277 students. The writer uses random sampling technique to take the sample of the research. The number of the samples of this study is 60 students. The samples are divided into two groups namely experiment group and control group. The first group or experiment group consists of 30 students who are taught by using brochures and the second group or control group consists of 30 students who are not taught by using brochures.
The instrument used in this research is a written test. Type of the test used consists of 2 options. The first option is students should read brochure of MR. BOB English Club, then make a similar based on the example of brochures. The second option is students should makes a paragraph about brochures based on the situation given, choosing between 3 titles are: English course, beauty product, and offering electronic product. The written rest is used to measure the students’ ability in writing. The result of statistical analysis in this research is tested by using t-test, for testing the differences between two groups. On the level of significance 5% and degree of freedom (df) 58, the t-table is 2,000 and t-test is 2,144. It shows that t-test is higher than t-table (2,144 > 2,000). It means there is a significantt difference of students’ ability in writing between those who are taught by using brochures and those who are not taught by using brochures.
Based on the result of the study, it can be there is concluded that the effect of using brochures gives positive effect towards students’ writing ability for eleventh grade senior high school students. Therefore, the teacher must be creative to use different kinds of media to teaching the students so, the students will be enjoyable to join in the class.
