THE EFFECT OF USING KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, AND LEARNED (KWL) STRATEGY TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION SKILL (An Experimental Study to the Eighth Graders of SMP N 05 Adiwerna Tegal in the Academic Year 2012/2013)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of teaching by using KWL strategy in reading comprehension to the second grade of SMP N 05 Adiwerna and to know about significance difference between the students who are taught using KWL strategy and the students who are taught without KWL strategy in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. The population of the study were second graders of SMP N 05 Adiwerna. There were 355 students from which 60 students were taken as the sample. The research is done by classifying the sample into two groups. They are the experiment group and control group. Each group consists of 30 students. Experiment group is students who are taught KWL strategy and control group is the students who are taught without KWL strategy. The sample is taken by using combination of two sampling. The technique is cluster random sampling technique.
The test is objective test. It is multiple-choice. There consisting of 30 items. The writer uses multiple-choice as the instrument to know the validity and reliability of the instrument. The writer gived a try out for students who have the same competence with the sample before the test is applied to experiment and control group.
Data analysis of this research is computed by using SPSS 15 for windows. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the significant level of 5% t-table is 2,002. Its result is t-test is higher than t-table (6,446 > 2,002). It means that there is significant difference of reading comprehension skill between students who are taught by using KWL strategy and the students who are taught without using KWL strategy.
The conclusion of this research is KWL strategy gives positive effect towards students’ reading comprehension skill in eight grade of SMP N 05 adiwerna tegal in the academic year 2012/2013.
