THE EFFECTIVENESS OF RETELLING STORY TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ NARRATIVE SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research on the Second Year Students of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in the academic Year of 2012/2013)

Teaching English in Junior High School is not an easy work. There are many things that should be considered by English teachers. In fact, the students of Junior High School still get difficulties in learning English, and of course, it becomes the problem to be solved. Therefore, the English teachers need a suitable learning technique to make the English teaching and learning process more effective and interesting. Retelling Story Technique is one of the learning Technique, which is able to be implicated by the teachers in teaching English. This learning Technique will accommodate an easy way for the students in learning English and it is expected, it makes learners feel enjoyable in their study.
The objective of this research is to find out wheter the effectiveness of Retelling Story Technique toward the Students' Narrative Speaking Achievement of the eighth grade students of Junior High School in SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in the academic year of 2012/2013. Population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami and the total number of population is 320 students. The writer chooses 60 students to be the sample of the research by using random sampling technique. The sample consists of 2 groups. each group consist 30 students. The first group is the students who are taught by Retelling Story Technique and the second group is the students who are not taught by using Retelling Story Technique.
The research data is gained from the English test that has been given to research samples during second semester. Data analysis is computed by using t-test formula. Based on the computation of data analysis, t-ratio is 2,824. On the level of significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 2,000. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,824 > 2,000). So, it could be concluded that the use of Retelling Story Technique gives positive effect towards the students' Narrative Speaking Achievement of the eighth grade students of Junior High School in SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in the academic year of 2012/2013.
