THE EFFECT OF APPLYING PRE-QUESTIONING TECHNIQUE TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION
Keywords: pre-questioning, reading comprehension
This study is conducted to find ot the effect of applying pre-questioning technique towards the students’ reading comprehension on tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Adiwerna in academic year 2012/2013.
The population of this research is all of the students at the tenth grade in the second semester of SMK Negeri 1 Adiwerna in Academic Year 2012/2013 which consists of 507. This research is conducted by sample of 60 students who are selected by using cluster random sampling and the sample consists of 2 groups. They are 30 students as experimental group who are treated by using pre-questioning technique and 30 students as control group who are treated by role play technique.
The data of this research is obtained by conducting test. The kind of the test of this research is multiple choice items of reading test and consists of 30 items. The writer had tried out the instrument by giving test to other students who have the same competence with the sample.
Based on the result of the research, it showed r -test is 0.631 and r –table is 0.361 with 0.05 significant level. It means r- test is higher than r- table (0.631 > 0.361). So, the test is valid. Then the writer found r11 is 0.751 and r table is 0.361 with 0.05 significant level. It means r-test is higher than r-table (0.751 > 0.361). It means that reading test is reliable.
The result of t-test is 4,213, then the writer consults it to t-table 5% significant degree (df) = (N1+N2)-2 = (30+30)-2 = 58. The writer found that t-table is 2,002 and t-test is 4,213. The result shows that t –test is higher than t-table (4,213>2,002). So, the zero hypothesis (H0) is refused and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
Based on analysis value above, the students who are taught by pre-questioning technique is better than students who are taught by role play technique. It means there is a significant effect of applying pre-questioning technique towards students’ reading comprehension achievement.
There are several suggestions in order to improve the students’ reading comprehension. First, teacher should find interesting method or technique which is suitable on the material and the goal of the learning such as reading. Second, pre-questioning technique is easy teachers to apply and it is easy to raise students’ motivation in teaching-learning reading.
