THE EFFECT OF USING STAR (SELECT, TEACH, ACTIVATE, AND REVISIT) DIAGRAMS TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade Students of MTs Al-Ikhlas Kluwut-Brebes in the Academic Year 2012/2013)
Key Words : STAR Diagrams Technique, Vocabulary Achievement
The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) Diagrams Tecnique towards Students’ Vocabulary Achievement (An Experimental Study to the Seventh Grade Students of MTs Al-Ikhlas Kluwut - Brebes in the Academic Year of 2012/2013). The research is done by classifying sample into two groups, they are experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 34 students. The sample is taken by using random sampling technique. Group one is experimental group that consists of students who are taught by using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) diagrams technique and group two is control group that consists of students who are taught without using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) diagrams technique.
The writer uses vocabulary test as the instrument of this research. Before the writer uses the instrument to get data of the research, the writer tests the validity and reliability by doing try-out to another seventh grade students first. The try-out test consists of 40 multiple choice questions. From the try-out, the writer finds 10 questions are not valid, so the writer just uses 30 questions as the instrument to measure the vocabulary achievement of the sample.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result with degree of freedom (df) 66 on the level of significance 5% with 2-tailed test (sig=0,025) t-table is 1,997, it shows that t-count is higher than t-table (2,265 > 1,997). It means that there is significant difference of the vocabulary achievement between students who are taught by using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) diagrams technique and the students who are taught without using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) diagrams technique.
The conclusion of this research is that using STAR (Select, Teach, Activate, and Revisit) diagrams technique gives positive effect towards the students’ vocabulary achievement at the seventh grade students of MTs Al-Ikhlas Kluwut - Brebes in the academic year of 2012/2013.
