THE EFFECT OF USING GROUP INVESTIGATION TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT ON THE EIGHTH GRADE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental study on the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami Pemalang Regency in Academic year 2012-2013)

The objective of this research is to know whether the applying of Group Investigation gives positive effect toward students’ Reading Achievement of the Eighth Grade in SMP N 1 Ulujami of Pemalang regency in the Academic year of 2012/2013.
Based on the theoretical background and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is “The effect of group investigation gives positive effect toward the students’ reading achievement of the eighth grade students in SMP N 1 Ulujami”. In other word, the students who are taught by applying group investigation have reading achievement better than students who are taught without applying group investigation.
The population of the research is the eighth grade students at SMP N 1 Ulujami. The number of population is 309 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of sample is 60 students, the sample consists of two groups, and each group consists of 30 students. Group I is experimental group. It consists of the students who are taught by applying group investigation. Group II is control group. It consists of the students who are not taught by applying group investigation.
The research of the instrument used in this research is multiple choices test which consists of 30 items and each items has four options. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer tries out the instrument by giving test to 30 students having the same competence with the sample of the study.The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 4,8766, with degree freedom (df) 58 and the level of significant (α) 5% = 2,021. It is absolutely said that t-test is higher than t-table (4,8766>2,021), because the t-test is higher that t-table, so that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
From the result of data analysis, the writer can conclude that the applying group investigation gives positive effect on reading achievement of the eighth grade students in SMP N 1 Ulujami of Pemalang regency in the academic year of 2012/2013.
Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to give suggestion for english teachers to help the sudents to get the best reading achievement through the various method. Group Investigation method that help students to develop their achievement and to increase motivation to study English in reading achievement.
